Covenant of Abraham

For the last few weeks we have been learning about Covenant or ברית Brit. The students used a site called http://www.sefaria.org to look up where the word covenant occurs in our holy texts.  Each student chose 3-5 examples that they found interesting. Then in class, we created a source sheet using their examples: https://www.sefaria.org/sheets/85759 or you can view the pdf here: Covenant – ברית | Sefaria Source Sheet Builder. The examples the students chose, helped us decipher what the ‘terms’ of our covenant with God are.  For instance, God gave us the Ten Commandments, and our observation of them is part of our promise to God.  God’s promise to us includes God’s protection.  We discussed that our part of the covenant included: observing Shabbat, following the commandments, and practicing Tikkun Olam or repairing the world. We talked about many ways of making the world a better place, and how that might translate into the students’ Mitzvah Projects for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah year.

In trope, we are in the process of learning the third of six trope clauses, Katon.  We have learned, Kadma Mahpach Pashta Munach and Katon, as well as Zakef G’dolah and Y’tiv.

With these first 3 clauses learned, the students are now able to chant a majority of everything in the Torah!

As a reminder, our first Prayer Project presentation will take place this Wednesday, November 15 with Ava teaching the class “Ein Kamocha”.  There is no Bet Midrash on Wednesday, November 22 and Sunday, November 26 due to the Thanksgiving holiday.  Denna will present her project on Wednesday, November 29, and Griffin on December 6th.  The full details of the Prayer Project can be found here.
